On Sunday 11 new graduates joined the ranks of the healthy on Majuro Atoll. These few have completed the intense training program at the Wellness Center and have learned to control their diabetes through diet and exercise. Each person has a normal blood sugar now and exercises five days a week! The graduates enjoyed a Island ceremony on Eneko Island with its crytsal clear waters and volleyball court. Payless Store Helps Community with Free Health Screening
On August 11th the Payless store invited the Wellness Center team to come and do a health screening for its customers. The team saw 55 people that afternoon, checking blood pressure, blood sugar and weight. Overall the results were good but several people had to come by the center and the hospital for follow up visits due to high blood sugar. 23% of the people seen were diabetic, most of them already knew they had diabetes but a few didn't know anything was wrong. This is why it's called a 'silent killer', you don't necessarily have any symptoms until it's too late! Lucky for these people they had a health screening done and found out there was a problem in time to save their lives and their legs.

Ejit Island hosts Cooking School
This last week on August 5th the small island community of Ejit hosted a community healthy cooking school. The island's Mayor, Alson Kelen, has been instrumental in bringing the Wellness Center to the community there. "I want everyone to be healthy here", says Kelen. On this trip the community members, 37 in all, learned to use local pumpkin to make a vegetable curry dish that is to die for. Everyone involved loved the dish took home a copy of the recipe. This is one of many trips to the island community. Plans are in the making for exercise classes and health screenings as well as cooking schools. Stay tuned for more news on this island community in the weeks to follow.

Kristin Smith, RN BSN of the Diabetes Wellness Center got to visit the CMI Arrak campus and talk to the young college students about health and diabetes. The 25 students are there to be part of the new CMI program to help students entering college get a better grip on class work. While there the students will do a 17 week course that includes healthy meals and daily exercise. This is a live in program that has had huge success in the past working with drop out students from high school. The Wellness Center will come out for 10 weeks and do a health education program for the students.

Kids summer program raps up
For the past few weeks youth have been coming to the Wellness Center to learn about health, fitness and respect for authority. This mini "boot camp" was adapted from the model used at the Arrak Campus boot camp for college students. In fact, one of the graduates from the Arrak Campus is leading the group of youth. Each day 20-30 kids from anywhere from 10-15 yrs old come and exercise in the gym and are taught how to be healthy. It's so great to hear kids saying "yes sir" and "no sir". Hopefully parents at home will notice a change and soon Majuro will be populated with a bunch of very fit and respectful youth.
